Overview

China’s recent decision to grant zero-tariff treatment to products from 53 African countries has renewed debate about the future of Africa-China trade relations and the prospects for export-led industrialization across the continent. While the initiative could create new opportunities for African producers and exporters, questions remain about whether preferential market access alone can address the structural challenges that have long constrained Africa’s participation in global value chains.

This virtual dialogue will examine the implications of China’s zero-tariff policy for African economies and explore what will be required to translate market access into tangible development outcomes.

The discussion will assess both the opportunities and constraints associated with the initiative, including productive capacity, trade competitiveness, regional integration, value addition, and industrial policy. Ultimately, the dialogue seeks to explore whether preferential access can become a catalyst for industrial growth or whether deeper reforms will be needed to unlock its full potential.
